CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Introduces the physical components and operation of microcomputers.  Focuses on computer literacy and provides hands on training in four areas of microcomputer applications software: word processing, electronic  spreadsheets, databases management and presentation software.  Use of a professional business integrated applications package is emphasized.    


MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course the student
 will be able to:
1.  Identify the principal hardware components of personal computers and describe their functions.
2.   Understand basic computer terminology
3.   Explain the relationship of computer hardware to software
4.   Power up a personal computer and use Window and its utilities to work with disks and files including displaying folders; copying, creating and deleting files and folders; sand controlling the operations of the computer.
5.   Use word processing applications software-Microsoft Word-to perform the following tasks:
Create and edit text
Save and retrieve a document
Format, edit and print a document
Center, underline, bold and indent text
Insert images into a document
Use the search and replace functions
Create multi-page documents
Use page setup to set margins, tabs, and indents
Use paragraph formatting to set line spacing
Use spell and grammar checker
6. Use spreadsheet application software-Microsoft Excel-to perform the following tasks: Format a worksheet; create simple formulas; use basic worksheet functions such as: SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, MIN, IF.
7.  Use a database application software to perform the following tasks: Create or modify a database structure; enter records in a database; create reports; sort and index a database file.
8. Demonstrate how electronic presentations are created.
